The Danish authorisation process, in the order it actually happens

For nurses and doctors educated abroad: your route, the documents each step needs, and the dates that decide whether a certificate is still valid when you apply. Every statement carries the page at STPS it was read from and the day it was read.

Before anything else: applications are on hold

STPS publishes this, and it decides whether the rest is worth starting now:

“We are currently not accepting applications for Danish authorization from nurses who are citizens of and/or educated in countries outside the EU/EEA. This is due to the introduction of a quota for applications”

There are four exceptions:

  • A specific offer of employment for adaptation and training purposes as a specially requested healthcare professional, covering the entire evaluation period
  • Valid legal residence in Denmark at the time of application for Danish authorization
  • Educated outside the EU/EEA but a citizen of Denmark (including the Faroe Islands or Greenland) or of another EU/EEA country
  • Educated in Greenland or the Faroe Islands

What this is

  • Your route, not a general one. 4 routes are in the catalogue, 21 steps in total, with what depends on what — so the dossier can tell you which step is genuinely open today and which one is only waiting.
  • Documents with their rules. Which need a certified translation, which may need legalisation, and which expire while you wait.
  • Dates that catch people. The language certificate must have been passed within the 12 months before you apply, unless you have stayed in Denmark since. A nurse has three years after the equivalence decision.

What this is not

  • We do not apply for you. You fill in the STPS form and pay the fee yourself. We never hold your STPS password and never log in as you.
  • We do not advise on immigration. Residence permits are a different authority and a different question.
  • We do not decide whether your education is equivalent. Only STPS does, and we do not predict what it will say or how long it will take.
  • We do not translate documents and we do not recommend a translator.

Where we are honest about not knowing

8 of the 21 steps have not been confirmed against STPS yet. They are in the dossier, and each one carries this line: “Not yet confirmed against STPS — check the authority's page before you rely on it.” A tracker that looked equally certain about what it checked and what it assumed would be worse than none.
